Concrete Driveways in Lake & Porter County

New driveways, full tear-out and replacement, widening and apron work, planned for Northwest Indiana winters and road salt.

A driveway built for Region winters

Your driveway takes more abuse than any other slab on the property: the weight of cars and trucks every day, snowplows and shovels all winter, salt tracked in from the street, and water that freezes and thaws in every crack. In Lake and Porter County, the driveways that last are the ones built with that in mind from the start.

What goes into a long-lasting driveway

  • Excavation and base. Topsoil and organic material come out, and a compacted stone base goes in. On the clay-heavy till common in south Lake County, base depth and drainage matter more than almost anything else, because wet clay under a slab is what heaves in February.
  • Slab thickness. Typical residential driveways are poured around 4 inches thick, with thicker sections often recommended where heavier vehicles, RVs or trailers park. Ask your contractor what they recommend for your use.
  • Reinforcement. Wire mesh, rebar or fiber reinforcement helps hold cracks tight if they do form.
  • Air-entrained mix. Microscopic air bubbles give freezing water room to expand. It’s standard practice for exterior concrete in freeze-thaw climates.
  • Joints and slope. Control joints spaced correctly, and enough pitch to move meltwater away from the garage and foundation.
  • Curing and sealing. Proper curing, then a penetrating sealer once the slab is ready, help resist salt scaling.

Replace or repair?

If the problem is a couple of cracked or sunken sections, repair or partial replacement may be all you need. See concrete repair & replacement. If the surface is scaling everywhere, there are wide cracks across most panels, or the base has failed, a full tear-out and replacement is usually the better long-term buy.

The apron, the curb and the town

The part of the driveway between the sidewalk and the street (the apron or approach) usually sits in the public right-of-way. Most towns in our area have rules about that section, and some require a permit for the driveway itself. For example, Merrillville limits residential driveway width and requires a permit, Valparaiso requires a Right-of-Way Cut permit to replace a driveway entrance, and Crown Point asks you to get Engineering approval before cutting into the street. Your town’s page has the details and links. A good contractor will know who pulls what.

Popular driveway upgrades

  • Widening for a third car or a parking pad beside the garage
  • A stamped or colored border along the edges
  • Exposed aggregate finish for extra texture and traction
  • Replacing the front walk and stoop at the same time to save on mobilization

When to schedule

Most driveway work in Northwest Indiana happens between spring and late fall. Contractors book up quickly once the weather breaks, so calling in late winter or early spring for a quote is a good way to get on the schedule early.
